Elezane Industries (Pty) Limited
is a proudly South African black enterprise whose main focus is the
harvesting through handpicking, processing and marketing of terrestrial
snails.
The company trade under the
name S.A. SNAILCOMPANY. The company was founded in 2001 and the name “Elezane”
was derived from a Zulu phrase that describe the fog that was rolling from
the hills to reach the villages where the founder of the company would pick
the first snails by hand.
The Handpicking of snails is
regarded as the most environmentally friendly way of dealing with snails.
This unique method has been the platform for the creation of large numbers
of seasonal job opportunities in the rural areas. Since its inception,
Elezane has entered into various mutually beneficial partnerships with community-based
organisations, farmers and entrepreneur to join
forces to build a sustainable South African snail industry.
The company is managed by
young entrepreneurs who have shown remarkable resilience as pioneers in a relatively
new industry. Through their perseverance the company has reached many
milestones and is uniquely positioned to contribute towards the reduction
of poverty in the rural areas.
